Visualizing natural phenomena using code

MOTIVATION

In a class called "Design Thinking and Techniques", we were asked to visualize a natural phenomenon using digital media, specifically with Processing code. I have always been mesmerized by the mathematical formulas that govern the natural world and knew that I wanted to code using these formulas.

During my initial research, I stumbled upon honeycomb sculptures that took advantage of the way honeybees constructed their nests. I found it intriguing that honeybees could build their honeycombs in virtually any space, so I decided to derive my own mathematical formulas based off of these honeycomb sculptures.

I compiled information about honeycomb structure and formation in my report below.

ITERATIONS

As I learned more about honeycomb formation, I moved away from the literal hexagonal representation of a single honeycomb to a more abstract representation of multiple honeycombs forming in a confined space. I ultimately wanted to capture the adaptability of multiple honeycombs and went through several iterations in my code.

Final

The following are final drawings and video of the visualization.
